Abstract

Background. The subject of the work is utmost new, firstly, due to addressing to the works by Pär Lagerkvist, a Swedish writer, poorly studied in Russia, and secondly, due to the decision of the comparativist problem, which has been raised earlier neither in Swedish nor in Russian studies of literature.
Materials and methods. The article relies on foreign and domestic treatises and applies the comparative approach to analyzing the texts.
Results. The article has proved typological commonality of mythological layers of Lagerkvist’s “Barabbas” and Dostoevsky’s “Demons”. In the two novels there have been detected similar symbols and motives, originating from the Christian corpus of texts. The results can be used in courses on Swedish and Russian literatures and the literary theory, as well as in courses on the influence of Christian texts on the world literature.
Conclusions. Both novels (“Barabbas” by P. Lagerkvist and “Demons” by F. Dostoyevsky) are built on the symbolism of the relationship between the wounded soul and the human ego. This ego is, on the one hand, brave and struggling, and on the other, always evil and opposed to the Divine. Both novels reinterpret Christian characters (Jesus Christ, Antichrist, Barabbas). The parallel with the Biblical context is more obvious in Lagerkvist’s novel, where there are also secondary characters, clearly referring to the Biblical characters.

Key words

Pär Lagerkvist, “Barabbas”, F. M. Dostoyevsky, “Demons”, Christianity, symbol.
